This award recognizes oncology hematology fellows demonstrating academic excellence, leadership, clinical scholarship, and most importantly dedication to the patients they serve. Nominations are submitted and recipients are selected by faculty from their respective program.


AASEMS JACOB, MD

AASEMS JACOB, MD
Aasems Jacob is the Chief Fellow in Hematology and Oncology at University of Kentucky. He completed medical school from University of Kerala, India and residency in Internal Medicine from Monmouth Medical Center, NJ. His clinical and research interests in the specialty include thoracic oncology, immunotherapy and healthcare disparities. He looks forward in continuing his final year of fellowship training and serve as a hematologist/oncologist in Eastern Kentucky. He enjoys travelling, photography, baking and cooking.

ROHIT KUMAR, MD
Dr. Kumar is from New Delhi, India and completed his undergraduate medical training at the Maulana Azad Medical College. He went on to complete his Internal Medicine Residency training at the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago, Illinois and a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. Currently, Dr. Kumar is completing his PGY-6 year at the University of Louisville and is currently Chief Fellow. His career interests include Thoracic Oncology and in his free time he enjoys binging on Netflix and trying new restaurants.

Director, Kentucky Cancer Program
Connie L. Sorrell is the Director of the Kentucky Cancer Program at the Brown Cancer Center, University of Louisville. She received her Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has over thirty-five years of experience administering public health and cancer control programs including ten years of employment with the Louisville & Jefferson County Health Department and consulting with the Kentucky Department for Public Health. She has served on boards for the National Breast Cancer Coalition, American Cancer Society, Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana, Susan G. Komen Kentucky, Louisville & Jefferson County Board of Health, Kentucky Breast Cancer Research and Education Trust Fund, Kentucky Women’s Cancer Screening Program, Kentucky Colon Cancer Screening Program, Colon Cancer Prevention Project, and the Kentucky Prostate Cancer Coalition. Ms. Sorrell has also had the privilege of leading breast cancer initiatives for Kentucky First Ladies Judi Patton, Glenna Fletcher, Jane Beshear, and Britainy Beshear and continues to administer Horses and Hope. Most recently, she is serving as the Principal Investigator of the LuCa National Training Network.

DONALD MILLER, MD, PHD

Dr. Miller completed his medical training and Ph.D at Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his Residency in Boston at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and his Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD. He is a Professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Department of Medicine. Dr. Miller is the James Graham Brown Chair of Oncology and Director of the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. He also serves at the Associate Vice President of Health Affairs at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Director for the University of Louisville M.D./Ph.D. Program and is on the Board of Directors and Founder of Advanced Cancer Therapeutics.

ROGER HERZIG, MD

ROGER HERZIG, MD

After completing his medical degree with honors and residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, he served in the Naval Medical Corps during the Vietnam War. During this service, while working at the National Cancer Institute, he worked to develop some of the first bone marrow transplant protocols to treat leukemia and lymphoma. He then returned to Cleveland and was the founding Director of bone marrow transplant programs at University Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic, before moving to Louisville to establish the Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program at UofL Health – James Brown Cancer Center.

LOWELL ANTHONY, MD, FACP

Lowell Anthony joined the UK Markey Cancer Center with more than two decades of experience in oncology and a special focus in gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine oncology. His clinical interests include drug development ranging from Phase I to III clinical trials. Agents targeting specific cellular signaling pathways and injectable radiolabeled compounds make up his past and current clinical investigative interests. He brings a clinical correlative component to complement the ongoing translational activities at Markey Cancer Center.

Dr. Anthony attended Vanderbilt University Medical School, where he also completed a medical residency and fellowship training in medical oncology and clinical pharmacology. He has previously been on the medical faculties at Vanderbilt University and the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

ROGER HERZIG, MD

DR. STEVENS

Dr. Stevens is one of the four founders of Norton Cancer Institute. He was born and raised in Louisville where he received his medical education. Dr. Stevens completed his formal training in Baltimore, Maryland, at The John Hopkins Hospital. He came back to Louisville in 1989 where he has remained. Dr. Stevens is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology.
